COLLECTING SCALES AND WEIGHTS - AN ABSORBING AND FASCINATING HOBBY.
Members of the
'INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF ANTIQUE SCALE COLLECTORS (EUROPE)'

|
...love to share (by phone, letter, email and/or personal contact) their pleasure in collecting and exploring
the enormous range of scales and weights that have been produced since the civilization of Mankind!
Meeting three times a year, members hear lectures, show new acquisitions, buy and sell scales and weights
in an entirely informal way.
The society's quarterly journal 'EQUILIBRIUM' provides the enthusiast with detailed researches into a
wide spectrum of scales and balances, and a regular Newsletter (see below) provides, amongst other things,
the personal stories behind collecting activities of out members and their displays.
The pictures below illustrate the range and variety of scales and balances that so fascinate our members -

AGM October 21st 2007
The Autumn meeting at Yew Lodge,Kegworth proved to be a treat of Oertling and De Grave from Barry Oliver and
Diana as you will read in John Knight`s report. It was great to see 2 new members Paddy White and his son
from Ireland and John and Marilyn Stannard from Yorkshire. Tony Vidler from Australia managed his first visit
and it was good to see Jimmie and Kathie Earle from Southern Ireland too.
The AGM marked the third year of the committee before re-election in October 2008 The Subscription remains the
same at £35, discounted to £30. If paid before the 1st January 2008. Mary Chellingworth was elected as a lay
member of the committee as she has computer skills that I find very useful! I hope one day to be fully computer
literate. Work is in progress with a commitment to produce a back-up to the Society`s Archives.
Next year will be an exciting year with our meeting in Liverpool during their year of Culture. John Edmundson,
the Curator of the Prescot Museum is arranging a Display of Liverpool Weights and Scales from their Bond
Warehouse to be viewed on the Saturday afternoon and we will hold our Sunday meeting at the Marriott which has
its own carpark and is adjacent to the Museum and the Lime Street Station. There is a lot to see with the Docklands,
many Museums and Galleries etc and I do advise you to book early.
October brings approximately 45 American members to join us at our meeting at Yew Lodge, Kegworth, Sunday 12th
October when we expect to have a show and tell of Members “goodies” on display with of course the usual Bourse.
If you have anything special or unusual that you would like to show or talk about please ring me. More about
this later next year.
The summer get-together will be at The Royal Arms, Sutton Cheney with tea back at Lindridge for those of you
who would like to visit us. The date will probably be Wednesday 15th July.
Please always feel that you can get in touch with me either by `phone or Email should you have any queries
and I hate to wish you A Happy Christmas so early but for those of you who I will not see or speak to, I do
send you all Best Wishes from Noel and myself.
Yours sincerely
Janet

As we have passed the shortest day, hopefully Spring will soon be here although many of you may say we haven't
experienced Winter yet.
Roy Ladell has done a marvellous job with EQM and Publications with the very supportive help of his wife Beryl
and after 11 years and the arrival of a grandchild, he feels he would like a change. I can't thank them enough
for all their sterling work and hopefully they will be able to take it easier and just enjoy the meetings from
now on. On you behalf I have sent a Book Token to Roy and a Garden Token to Beryl by way of a thank you from
us all. From 1st March, Ray Malcolm will be taking over Publications with the help of Kathleen. They are well
known to most of you, Ray being one of our first members and has always been willing to help, organising quite
a few of our meetings in the Oxford area over the years.
I must apologise for my somewhat inadequate report of the October Meeting 2006 and at Albert Rangeley's suggestion,
Ken Grovier has given us an excellent report - available on the
Events page.
It is good for those members who were not at the meeting to know what
they have missed and I am hoping that someone may step forward to report the Spring Meeting at Kegworth.
I have been in touch with Utz Schmidt in Michigan re the American Convention May 17th-21st. The Itinerary sounds
very interesting and if you wish to find it on the web ask me for the password! If you need any other details
please get in touch with Diana or myself. I hope to go to this but will not be able to commit myself until nearer
the time. I have been to San Fransisco and the Seattle meeting and it was great fun - Isasc is a great society to
belong to.
Finally, I hope to see as many of you as possible at the Kegworth meeting - Yew Lodge is a very salubrious venue.
Kind regards
Janet Scarratt
Chairman, Isasc Europe.

Sadly, we must say farewell to Tom Dooley on his retirement as President of the American faction and a
warm welcome to Peter Laycock of North York, Canada, who has taken over. Noel and I had some very happy
times with Tom (who frequently attended our meetings) and his wife Gloria.
The Society Journal 'EQM' is now in full colour and some great ideas are in the pipeline for future issues.
Our next meeting - including the AGM - will be at the Falcon Hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon on 8 October
2006. So we hope to see as many as possible there, including anyone who would like to join
the Society.
